In occasione del CES 2013 in corso di svolgimento in questi giorni Qualcomm ha presentato i nuovi system-on-a-chip Snapdragon 600 e Snapdragon 800, che vanno a sostituire gli attuali Snapdragon S4 Pro introducendo anche un cambio di nomenclatura. I nuovi processori sono più potenti degli attuali e vanno a migliorare alcuni aspetti critici: GPU, connettività e consumi (e, quindi, durata della batteria).

I nuovi Snapdragon 600 sono destinati alla fascia alta del mercato e prevedono miglioramenti su tutti i fronti rispetto all’offerta attuale: l’impiego di una CPU Krait 300 quad-core con frequenze fino a 1.9GHz consente di ottenere un miglioramento delle prestazioni che arriva fino al 40%, mentre il comparto grafico è affidato alla ben nota GPU Adreno 320 che costituisce un passo avanti rispetto alle attuali. Il supporto alle memorie di tipo LPDDR3 (Low Power DDR3) fa sì che anche sul fronte delle memorie ci sia un deciso aumento prestazionale. Qualcomm sta distribuendo i primi sample e la disponibilità ai produttori è prevista per il secondo trimestre di quest’anno – che si può tradurre in una disponibilità dei prodotti per gli ultimi mesi del 2013.

Snapdragon 800 si presenta come processore per la fascia enthusiast, prendendo a prestito questa terminologia dal settore PC: questa è la next-gen di Qualcomm, con tutto ciò che ne deriva. La CPU Krait 400 è composta da quattro core prodotti a 28nm con un particolare processo produttivo denominato HPm (High Performance for mobile) che rende possibili alte prestazioni con un consumo minimo. I core avranno frequenze di clock fino a 2.3GHz, con un deciso aumento rispetto alla generazione attuale. L’architettura SMP asincrona (Simultaneous Multi-Processing) fa sì che sia possibile gestire indipendentemente i singoli core e spegnerli quando non in uso, rendendo possibile un ulteriore risparmio energetico. Tutto questo si traduce in un incremento prestazionale pari al 75% rispetto alle controparti Snapdragon S4 Pro.

Anche la GPU impiegata è di nuova generazione: la nuova Adreno 330 promette prestazioni doppie rispetto alla Adreno 320 di cui è equipaggiato lo Snapdragon 600. Tutto questo permette di poter gestire contenuti in Ultra HD (4K: 3840×2160), ovvero quattro volte il Full HD (1920×1080). Sono supportati display fino a 2560×2048 e lo standard Miracast con output in Full HD.

La connettività non è lasciata in disparte: insieme al modem 4G LTE capace di velocità pari a 150Mbps troviamo infatti un modulo WiFi IEEE 802.11ac, capace di connettività con velocità di 1Gbps. Completano il quadro USB3, Bluetooth e radio FM.

Attualmente Qualcomm sta distribuendo i primi sample e i primi dispositivi con all’interno il nuovo Snapdragon 800 sono attesi per metà 2013.

Non è chiaro se questi processori impieghino un’evoluzione dell’architettura Krait impiegata sulla serie Snapdragon S4 Pro o se si tratti semplicemente di un affinamento della stessa. Un simile miglioramento prestazionale difficilmente può dipendere solo dall’incremento di frequenze e dal cambio di processo produttivo, quindi è possibile che Qualcomm abbia implementato nuove funzionalità all’interno dei nuovi processori.

Qualcomm sembra voler mantenere il ruolo di leader per potenza bruta, mentre NVIDIA punta sempre più sui contenuti seguendo il vecchio adagio: “la potenza è nulla senza contenuti“. Le carte giocate sono, in ogni caso, di interesse eccezionale e mostrano un futuro radioso per l’hardware mobile.
